What Is Prenatal Development?
Prenatal development is the process by which a fetus grows into a healthy baby—basically, the period from conception till delivery. During this time, which typically takes about 38 weeks, the essential organs and body systems form and grow inside the mother's womb. The prenatal period sets the foundation for future growth and development, so it is an incredibly sensitive time.

Typically, we divide a nine-month pregnancy into thirds or trimesters, each lasting three months. However, from a psychological standpoint, pregnancy is divided in a slightly different manner, still into three stages of prenatal development.
The Germinal Stage
The germinal stage often concludes before the mother-to-be even knows it has begun and only lasts about two weeks from conception. During this time, the ovum implants itself in the uterine wall, and the initial cell divides into two, then again and again. At first, the multiplying cells are unspecialized, but even within the first two weeks, they begin to assume the particular roles they will later play as part of a fully formed body.
The Embryonic Stage
The embryonic stage continues for the next six weeks or so as the pregnancy progresses to the end of the second month. During this stage, more and more cells form for specific purposes, such as the development of the spinal cord.
By the end of the embryonic stage, the fetus is about an inch long but already looks human, with a large head compared to the rest of the body. The heart can already beat, and the stomach can produce digestive fluids, even though it's still seven months before the newborn's first meal.
This stage is also when the fetus is particularly vulnerable to harm from external agents known as teratogens like drugs (including alcohol and nicotine), diseases, and diet.
The Fetal Stage
The final stage of prenatal development is the fetal stage, lasting seven months. This stage is the longest by far of the three periods, and it's during this time that a huge amount of physical growth occurs and the baby bump protrudes prominently. Bones form, hair grows, and sensory organs such as eyes, ears, and taste buds develop fully.
By about 28 weeks, a baby's nervous, circulatory, and respiratory systems can support independent existence should the baby be born prematurely. Every kick and turn the mother-to-be feels at this stage is an exciting sign of the psychological development regarding motor control in the womb.
